Join us for this very special event! We are thrilled to present a screening of the short film Into the Dark, directed by Fiona Otway.

Every summer for over a decade, artist Pete Mauney treks into the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, all alone. Where most people might see a desolate darkness, he finds solace and inspiration. With some knowing and patient observation, a landscape slowly begins to shimmer and sparkle. Fireflies dance all around. Pete’s trusty old car is filled with cameras and each night he performs a familiar ritual of setting up tripods, synching shutters, and carefully calibrating timelapses. With an ever-elusive ideal in mind, these efforts bring him into confrontation with everything he can’t control. And this is where the magic begins.

Following the screening and Q&A with Pete and Fiona, we'll host a firefly walk led by Pete Mauney.

Fiona Otway is a filmmaker crafting nuanced, emotionally resonant stories about our potential to shape the world we live in. Her work fundamentally seeks to understand how we can spark transformational change in ourselves and others. At the heart of this exploration is deep curiosity. How are assumptions and certainties formed, spread, hardened, erased, transmuted, unraveled? How do we learn to ask more courageous, humble, dynamic, catalytic questions? As an editor for over 25 years, Fiona Otway’s work has received numerous awards, including the ‘Best Editing’ award and the ‘Grand Jury Prize’ from Sundance Film Festival, a DuPont Award, a Grierson Award, an International Federation of Film Critics award, nominations for Cinema Eye Honors, Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, and three Academy Award nominations.

Pete Mauney (b. 1967) is a photographer and photographic technician. For the past decade, Mauney’s creative practice has focused on documenting fireflies and airplanes in the evening, applying his technical knowledge and skills to accurately depicting an accumulation of time in space. Mauney received his MFA and BA in photography at Bard College, with a prior two-year stint at NYU in film. He has also worked with a number of distinguished artists by providing art reproduction, fine art printing, and drum scanning. His work has been featured on NPR, Wired, Chronogram, and Colossal to name a few and is in multiple collections including the Morgan Library and The Black Gold Museum in Saudi Arabia. @pete_mauney
