Ever wondered why soil's appearance can vary so greatly by location? This walk is for you! Join Dr. Jane Lucas from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for a soil walk. If you haven't noticed, the soil changes quite a bit even within our Arboretum. Learn why--and learn all about soil composition and health.
Dr. Jane Lucas is a Community Ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York. Her specialties include microbial ecology, ecology of antibiotics, agricultural ecosystems and soil health, global change ecology, ecology of microbiomes, and plant-insect-microbe interactions. In her current Stressed Out Soils project, Lucas is examining how four factors — antibiotics, fungicides, rising temperatures, and drought — interact in surprising ways to influence communities of soil microbes, plants, and insects. Findings will inform strategies to help farmers maintain healthy soils and maximize soil carbon storage in the rapidly changing Hudson Valley and beyond.
